The Holy Cross College Archives and Special Collections is proud to share a new digital archive, Project Q+, with the Holy Cross community. Project Q+ serves as a digital repository for LGBTQIA+ related materials from across Holy Cross’ history. These items portray all aspects of the rich LGBTQIA+ history here on campus and they reflect moments of protest, courage, and community support. http://hcdigitalscholarship.com/lgbtqia/
Project Q+ was established in 2016 by Molly Brown-Heidemann and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. With the help of many Holy Cross students, the project began to collect physical and digital items from throughout the College’s history and worked to digitize the items in hopes of making this history as publicly accessible as possible. Individually, each artifact tells a personal story, but when combined provides a timeline of LGBTQIA+ history at the College. These stories are made possible by generous contributions from students, faculty, staff and alumni.
The name of the archive stems from the commitment to adding queer voices back into the mainstream history of the College of the Holy Cross. The LGBTQ+ Community has always been here, and our goal is not only to uncover and preserve the history of queer students both past and present, but to establish their legacy in the overarching, complicated past of our institution.
Project Q+ was transferred into the College Archives’ care in 2019 and the college archivists worked to organize the physical materials, create research guides, and update the metadata on the project’s website. Now, Project Q+ is officially available online, with over 300 items to explore! This project is dedicated to Holy Cross’ LGBTQIA+ community, who always had the courage to be out and make themselves heard. It is the Archives’ hope that this project amplifies the voices of this community and encourages more stories to be told.
The Holy Cross Archives and Special Collections department is still collecting items related to LGBTQIA+ history at the College. A complete list of items can be found at this website: https://www.holycross.edu/sites/default/files/Dinand/holy_cross_lgbt_research_guide_feb_2020.pdf . Some items in the complete list have not been digitized and are not on this website, but can be found at the College Archives. Please contact the Archives Department for more information or with donation inquiries at email@example.com.
